Ten Things about BR Ambedkar That You Probably Didn't Know

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar is a tall figure of 20th century Indian  history. Popularly known as Babasaheb, the details about his careers as a lawyer, politician, constitution framer, social reformer and an economist are well known. He's an inspiration to crores of young Indians today of various classes and ideologies.

But there are ten snippets about this famous man, that are not quite highlighted. Time to take a look at them. I will provide references for each as to where I learned about them, and if any of them need correction or contention, please post comments with authentic references.

1: Dr. Ambedkar stood for Sanskrit as the official language of India.

This is not a well known fact, but it is a fact. In 2005, this was revealed by Chamu Krishna Shastry, a well known Sanskrit proponent in India.
"Dr Ambedkar himself wanted to sponsor Sanskrit as the official language of the Indian union along with his supporters Dr BV Keskar, deputy minister for external affairs, and Naziruddin Ahmed. He moved an amendment draft on September 10, 1949. The resolution had to be withdrawn due to political pressure."
Reference: Ambedkar wanted Sanskrit as official language

It is anyone's guess as to who might have exerted " political pressure" on Ambedkar in 1949 to withdraw that historic resolution, which could have changed India in an different direction. Ambedkar's strong support to Sanskrit is something to ponder upon, for those who consider Sanskrit as an "Aryan" language of upper castes, that should not be supported.

2: Ambedkar is actually a Hindu Brahmin surname.
Image from Wiki

Bhimrao's original surname was Ambavadekar. It comes from his family's native village name in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, even though he was born in today's Madhya Pradesh region. In Marathi, it is a common practice to add "kar" to the village name as the surname.

In this writeup in the Outlook, Smruti Koppikar describes how his favourite Hindu Brahmin teacher, Mahadev Ambedkar, changed his surname from 'Ambavadekar' to his own surname 'Ambedkar' in the school records. The respect Bhimrao had for his teacher Mahadev, ensured that his borrowed surname continued for rest of his life! It tells us that Bhimrao respected all castes - his fight was against caste discrimination, and not Hinduism or any particular caste.

3. Ambedkar's father was a Vegetarian.

This one really surprised me. In the recent days, whenever there's a protest against ban on cow slaughter, you will invariably see an Ambedkar picture and beef eating "ceremonies".

But after reading Vikram Doctor's blog on the Economic Times, I stumbled upon two surprising details.
"Nor is it correct to equate all upper-castes with vegetarianism and all Dalits with eating meat – Dr.Ambedkar’s father, for example, was vegetarian."
"I’m not sure if Dr.Ambedkar became vegetarian when he converted to Buddhism – Keer’s book doesn’t seem to make this clear and there is a surprising lack of other biographical material."
It looks like being a Kabir Panthi, Ambedkar's father Ramji was certainly a vegetarian and teetotaler. It also kind of implies that Babasaheb might have become a vegetarian coming from that family and also a vegetarian during the later part of his life. Something that needs a bit more research. And those who follow Ambedkar's path, this is something critical to ask - why was his father and (likely) himself vegetarian?

4. Nehru prevented Ambedkar from entering Lok Sabha. Jan Sangh got him to Rajya Sabha.

Ambedkar contested Lok Sabha election twice. Both times Nehru's Congress made sure that he was defeated. Babasaheb Ambedkar contested from Bombay North in the first Indian General Election in 1952 but lost to the Congress candidates Narayan Kajrolkar, who had been his assistant once. He tried to enter Lok Sabha again in 1954 when he contested the by-election from Bhandara but he was placed third in the ballot won by Congress.
"In 1952, the Congress defeated Ambedkar in the parliamentary seat of Dadar in Bombay. It is strange that Jawaharlal Nehru did the sin of campaigning against Ambedkar during the elections.”
"The reason behind this was the Congress mentality of devaluing him. Later, the role played by Jan Sangh in getting him elected for Rajya Sabha from West Bengal is not hidden from anybody,” -  Arvind Menon, BJP.
So much for "love" of Ambedkar by Congress party.

Reference: Babasaheb was close to Jan Sangh, says BJP

Edit on 17th August 2016 - The reported claim by BJP above (see reference) was challenged by many people. Some are giving credit to Muslim League and JN Mandal of Bengal too. But the common theme is still that Congress did not help Dr. Ambedkar, but others did.

5. Bhimrao's second wife was a Hindu Brahmin.

Ambedkar met Dr. Sharada Kabir, a Saraswat Brahmin, when he needed medical treatment in the late 1940s. He married her on 15 April 1948, at his home in New Delhi. His first wife had passed away a decade ago. Doctors recommended that he needed a companion who was both a good cook and a possessor of medical knowledge and could thus take care of him. She adopted the name Savita Ambedkar and took care of him for the rest of his life.

It is unfortunate that any political or NGO conversations regarding Ambedkar quickly turn into anti-Brahmin mode, when his borrowed surname is that of a Brahmin and his wife who served him during most needy years, was a Brahmin woman.

6. Ambedkar was not against Hindutva or RSS.

Ambedkar actually claimed Hindutva for the Dalits (untouchables or depressed classes) in 1927.
"Hindutva belongs as much to untouchable Hindus as to the touchable Hindus. The temples must be open for all. Efforts were made for the growth of Hindutva by Brahmins like Vasishta, Kshatriyas like Krishna, Vaishyas like Harsha and Shudras like Tukaram. The same amount of efforts for Hindutva were pitched in by untouchables (Dalits) like Valmiki (of Ramayana), Drishthara of Vyadha Gita, Chhokamela and Rohidasa. We have brave Sidnak Mahar kind of untouchable who fought for protection of Hindutva. Both touchable and untouchable Hindus have served the Hindu temples built in the names of Hindutva. So everyone has the right to enter them."

He also also praised Hindutva ideologue Veer Savarkar's efforts to eradicate caste discrimination in his Janata paper in 1933.
"Savarkar's efforts to uplift Dalits are as noble and effective as Gautama Buddha's"
Ambedkar even visited RSS camp and praised them.
"Ever conscious of Hindu movements supporting Sanghatan – social solidarity, Dr.Ambedkar visited RSS camp in Pune in May 1939. He expressed his satisfaction: “I am surprised to find Swayamsevaks here moving about in absolute equality and brotherhood without even caring to know the castes of others."

7. Ambedkar's strong views on Muslim society's evils, Christianity and Partition of India.

When some Dalit youth were supporting the anti-India Razakars of Hyderabad after independence, Ambedkar told them not to take that path:
"Hyderabad state's scheduled castes must not support the Nizam or Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen under any circumstance. No scheduled caste member should join hands with anti India forces, bringing disrepute to their castes"

If you read Ambedkar's book, chapter 10, you would start seeing his absolutely rational arguments condemning the evils of Muslim society in pre-partitioned India.

Read chapter 10 for instance which has a sub title ;- Muslim Society is even more full of social evils than Hindu Society is
"the Muslim woman is the most helpless person in the world."
"No words can adequately express the great and many evils of polygamy and concubinage, and especially as a source of misery to a Muslim woman. It is true that because polygamy and concubinage are sanctioned, one must not suppose they are indulged in by the generality of Muslims; still the fact remains that they are privileges which are easy for a Muslim to abuse to the misery and unhappiness of his wife."
"Take the caste system. Islam speaks of brotherhood. Everybody infers that Islam must be free from slavery and caste. Regarding slavery nothing needs to be said. It stands abolished now by law. But while it existed, much of its support was derived from Islam and Islamic countries. While the prescriptions by the Prophet regarding the just and humane treatment of slaves contained in the Koran are praiseworthy, there is nothing whatever in Islam that lends support to the abolition of this curse..... But if slavery has gone,  caste among Musalmans has remained. As an illustration one may take the conditions prevalent among the Bengal Muslims."
"There can thus be no manner of doubt that the Muslim Society in India is afflicted by the same social evils as afflict the Hindu Society. Indeed, the Muslims have all the social evils of the Hindus and something more. That something more is the compulsory system of purdah for Muslim women."
Regarding Pakistan, if you read the Chapter 14 of the same book, you can clearly see that he wanted transfer of Muslims to Pakistan (east and West) with non Muslims back to India from there.
What about its workability? The scheme is not new. It has been tried and found workable. It was put into effect after the last European War, to bring about a transfer of population between Greece and Bulgaria and Turkey and Greece. Nobody can deny that it has worked, has been tried and found workable. The scheme I have outlined is a copy of the same scheme. It had the effect of bringing about a transfer of population between Greece and Bulgaria and Turkey and Greece. Nobody can deny that it was [=has] worked with signal success. What succeeded elsewhere may well be expected to succeed in India.
The most recent Organiser special edition on Ambedkar notes his view about Christianity and Islam, and conversion in general:
Ambedkar was against Dalits converting to Christianity or Islam because he believed that “if the numbers of Muslims and Christians rise and it will cause danger to India.”

8. Ambedkar's openly opposed Article 370 of Nehru's Congress, for Jammu and Kashmir.

Ambedkar opposed Article 370 in the Constitution, which gives a special status to the State of Jammu and Kashmir, and it was put against his wishes. Balraj Madhok reportedly said, Ambedkar had clearly told Sheikh Abdullah:-
"You wish India should protect your borders, she should build roads in your area, she should supply you food grains, and Kashmir should get equal status as India. But Government of India should have only limited powers and Indian people should have no rights in Kashmir. To give consent to this proposal, would be a treacherous thing against the interests of India and I, as the Law Minister of India, will never do it."

9. Ambedkar was a confirmed enemy of Communists, in his own words!

Read this excerpt from a book on India.
In another context, presiding over a District conference of the Depressed Classes at Masur in September 1937, Ambedkar declared that he was a confirmed enemy of the Communists who exploited the labourers for their political ends, and there was no possibility of joining them.

10. Ambedkar warned India against China's aggression on Tibet and beyond.

The Time issue dated October 22, 1951, noted:
Ambedkar is the first important Indian official who has openly attacked Nehru for being too friendly to China and not friendly enough to the US”.
On China he disagreed with the Tibet policy and the enunciation of Panchsheel. He said:-
“If Mao had any faith in the Panchsheel, he certainly would treat the Buddhist in his own country in a very different way. There is no room for Panchsheel in politics”.

I admire Dr. Ambedkar but I'm not going to base my view of his ideology of equality for all on this article.
How can a man who wrote our great constitution with stress on equality have such harsh opinions about Muslims or any other castes.

  12. No Thank you. Anything that preaches or teaches hatred and intolerance is not for me. A society (any society) that breeds such hateful emotions based on religions, castes, skin color or any other diversity is evil and thats just it.
I know for sure the person who wrote the constitution could never have such fundamentalist views. Infact, do yourself a favor, learn that hatred leads to self-destruction and that not all accounts true accounts or even interpreted correctly for that matter.
For instance, Dr. Babasaheb opposed conversion to other Christianity and Islam not because it posed threat to India but because he wanted the dalits hindus to be treated fairly and equally like rest.
He always stressed on democracy and freedom to chose which is why I cannot agree to your line where he wanted all muslims to be sent to Pakistan and non-muslims to be bought back to India because that would mean use of force and freedom of choice.
One more thing. The recent agenda of accepting India as Hindutva nation is widely publicised as the ideology of accepting one and all irrespective of one's religion yet your blog in one point states Hindutva for non-dalits and dalits. This is exactly what is wrong with the use of this term. Although publicized as secular term, Ill-informed people can use "Hindutva" to spread intolerance amongst general public.

  23. The problem is not secularism but the politics that our politicians play in the name of secularism by both sides that is "for" secularism and one "against". How can a concept that ask everyone to be treated equally be wrong? Secularism and true democracy goes hand in hand. The laws and rights of all citizens should be equal and not just something favorable for majority or in some cases for minorities (vote banks for our corrupt politicians).
Dr. Ambedkar was a visionary and he fought for the equal rights for all and hence to basket him as against secularism or against muslisms or any minority is not only wrong but an insult to this great person who for me is on equal level with Mahatma Gandhi. I personally still have no qualms to call him Mahatma. And Secularism is no property of congress. It is a privilege for us all Indians to be called citizens of a secular country and not some religiously motivated one.

  24. I think among these “interesting facts,” the writer of this blog is losing the sight of the fact that Amberkar is not at all about Hindutva! He is much much more than this. This post reeks of some agenda! What would have been more interesting if you would have pointed out that it was Ambedkar who made brought about the labour laws like 8 hour’s working day, maternity leave, and PF.
He had the foresight to divide our forces into three sections so that the power is not concentrated in any one person’s hands thereby ensuring that our democracy is secure from any future dictators!
The list goes on. Rather than focussing on casts, it would be great if we could focus on his work!

  25. Ambedkar on Hindu Rashtra and India
It has been a topic of endless discussion why Ambedkar in the constitution of India Article 1 said 'India that is Bharat'. A clue could lie in this passage:

“If Hindu Raj becomes a reality then it would be greatest menace to this country. Whatever may Hindus say, actually it does not make a difference that Hinduism is a danger to Independence, Equality and Brotherhood. Thus it is an enemy of democracy. We should make all out efforts to stop Hindu Raj from becoming a reality.”

Ambedkar knew that India is not Hindustan and wanted to prevent any such claim... as is now being claimed that Hindutva is the same as 'Indian' and 'cultural nationalism'. 'Cultural nationalism' is facism, borrowed from the Nazis by the fathers of Hindutva V D Savarkar etc.

The 42nd amendment put paid to any hope of a theocratic Hindu Rashtra, by adding 'secular' to the preamble.

  27. Today 14 April...salutes and tribute to this great man Dr Ambedkar.
I wish Pt Neharu would have given proper justice to Babasahebs intellectuals. Babasahesb was great economist. Had Dr Amabedkar a finance minister and had Indian Govt listened to his suggestion about Kashnir issue India would have better status now,
@Dybs.. Veer Sawarkars concept of Hinduism was different. Both these personalities had great respect for each other.
    http://www.savarkar.org/en/social-reforms/q
Read more on this site. I hope you would. As per Babasahebs teachings one has to educate him/herself. One can argue on some points but not good just to neglect what other person suggest. Opposition should not be just to oppose any concepts or comments. Today I attended one Babasahebs program. One speaker said Babasahebs Trusutri ..( in Marathi) shika sanghatit vha , sangharsh kara...has different significance at present. Yesterday on one TV channel one Industrialist Mr Kamble said.. We have taken Dr Ambedkar on head but we are not taking his thoughts in our head.
Kiran.. Once again I appreciate contents of your thoughts..Those who follow Babasahebs teachings will put their rebuttal with references.

  30. Frndz ! Just chanced upon d blog.
More fiction less facts about RSS nd it's Hindu ideology seem to have captured d imagination of a few of d bloggers here. I think I might b of greater help since was associated to RSS since childhood through Saraswati Shishu Mandir (1968 to 1974) than through Shakha (unit nd command) level.
At my school (run by RSS) we used to celebrate Dr. Ambedkar Jayanti with great fan fare as part of curriculum. At Shakha level we used ro organize a Sahbhoj program (luncheon) at Dalit/
Malin localities once or twice a month. We were never allowed to disclose our cast at any RSS gathering. Also that during any social need like marriage aur death we never hesitated to be a part of any dalit or muslim family provided there was a need and acceptance for our presence. During any crisis like floods, draught, fire aur accident RSS volunteers never shown any discrimination and served the needy with best of their might.
At RSS we respected all those who respected India and worked for it's unity. That is why we had more than 2000 muslims volunteers regularly attending our shakhas in 1978 at Mathura City (UP) alon where I belong to post emergency.

  31. After the above brief and actual introduction of RSS functioning as a social, integral and pure patriotic force now let us know why people who judged RSS with Congress, communist or cast based parameters of some political parties of modern India, fear or hate it. Why we do not find a single person who actually worked in RSS gor a substantial period and came put an opponent denouncing it as anti national or fasist. We all know that during 1920s Muslim Legue had openly started supporting an armed rebellion for a separate Muslime state with cladestine support from London (British). That was d time when lots of confusive and unwanted wrong practices were also dominating the earstwhile Hindu community. Local level communal flareups and riots jad been on the steep rise. Jindu Mahasabha was a strong but higher cast only answer wirh Hindus for an increasingly offensive Muslims. Dalits had absolutely no clear understanding in the face of absence of any strong leadership and sense of pride. Both- Baba Saheb and Dr. K B Hedgevar (RSS Founder) understood d need of time in different perception and adopted different methods to unify the weaking Hindu society. Dr. Hedgevar perceived unification of all Hindu casts and conceived RSS as a strong, armed reactionary force for protection of otherwise defenceless and non offensive unarmed Hindus. Here you can compare his deeds to what Guru Gobind Singh Ji had done during extreme muslim oppressions. He started this Sahbhoj and Sahyog program at hitherto untouchable Hindu colonies and ensured the presence of even Brhmins in all those SAMRASATA events. RSS attained it's actual shape when deprived and routed Hindus from Bengal nd Punjab started arriving in devided India. Even Nehru Ji and aba Saheb had a lots of praise for the rehabilitation work done by RSS during 1947. Since than RSS has remained a great deterrent in d path of anti national and religiously fanatic forces.

  32. It was RSS mainly who opposed emergency in 1976 and paid a heavy price for supporting J P and voices of dissent to Indira. If you actually want to understand RSS than study the lives of it's full timers (Pracharaks) who, mostly very high educated, donate their precious careers and lifes for the service of nation and are never paid a single penny for it. They may be the most powerful but you will find them always simplest to the core and away from most of the modern day vices.
Comming from western UP (where muslims are sizable and very terbulant in afew cities like Aligarh, Moradabad, Sambhal, Kanpur etc) I have closely watched the riots. The so called secular political bigwigs gain most from any riot hence they prefer to act one sided (pro muslim) during and after any riot. The defenceless Hindu who takes d maximum brunt of all attacks during riots are mostly Dalits who have to live face to face with any muslim concentration. RSS becomes the first a d foremost force saving, reviving and rehabilitating them. I have witnessed many a scenes where miscreants and criminals ran away seeing RSS volunteers.
I shall conclude with- in a country where politics is based on sole considerations of votes, Obesis are regularly born, call for a uniform civil code is a big crime, national flag bearers are punished by states and Pakistan and ISIS flags go scot free, people gether courage to challenge and insult d motherland while sitting in Delhi (JNU/ Envoy Meet with Kashmiri separatists), Akhlak gets 40 lacs and a martyr's family has to face famish, where we do not bycott Chinese goods and Pakistani sugar/onion even they keep on waging war against us, Any Ajam Khan is rewarded for calling Bharat Mata a "Dayan" and justice has been left alon for Supreme Court (comment to be verified since very few make it to SC) we need strong social, patriotic reactionary forces like RSS to keep a shelter open for mostly defenceless. Let us stop biting each other posing like very fashionable educated seculars and start understanding d real and growing dangers of disintegration from within and across d border.

  34. He is regarded as the architect of the Indian Constitution. Of late, there has literally been a fight among various political parties to claim his legacy.

But, Dr Ambedkar has on a number of occasions spoken against extreme form of Hindutva.

The same is evident in five quotes by Dr Ambedkar:

“Slavery will not be tolerated in the name of religion. This Manusmriti, in the very first chapter says that Brahmans are created from Brahma’s (creator’s) head, Kshatriya from his hands, Vaishyas from his thighs and Shudras from his feet. By burning this Manusmriti, we launch a mission to uproot casteism from its roots. But getting rid of caste alone is not our goal, this is the beginning of social revolution which would end Brahman hegemony.”

“A bitter thing cannot be made sweet. The taste of anything can be changed. But poison cannot be changed into nectar.” (in response to Mahatma Gandhi's efforts to reclaim Dalits back into the Hindu fold.)

“…no one can doubt that there was a time when Hindus, both Brahmins and non-Brahmins, ate not only flesh but also beef.”

“Though, I was born a Hindu, I solemnly assure you that I will not die as a Hindu.”

“I will not believe in Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Neither would I worship them.”

If u want reference just copy and paste the quotes in Google search bar...

  38. great blog i read ever about ambedkar ,the lagend. everyone in this country is debited to his immense work towards well being of lower cast, women, children, company and daily wage workers.no need to debate on his revolutionary personality, just try to be at his place in those ridiculous days ruled by slavery biased upper caste manu followers. he made an achievement that seems to be impossible ar that times. i dont need to make my opinion towards him as stated above by some wonderful geniuses who is residing abroad. if he want to enjoy the golden days of past and opposing him like anything ,he surely need a standing applaud, but be conscious as his followers like me believe in his thoughts that achieved by doing degrees not by chanting useless manu made gods and geniuses like all of you
